Acronis or Veeam? A Backup Software Guide for Organizations

Acronis and Veeam don’t answer the same question. Acronis is a unified platform that backs up endpoints — PCs, servers, individual virtual machines — with a single agent, while also protecting them from malware. Veeam is an infrastructure-first tool built for deep backup of virtualized environments (VMware, Hyper-V), physical servers, and cloud/SaaS workloads (Microsoft 365, Salesforce). Both sell under the same “backup software” label, but they’re engineered for different problems — which is why comparing them head-to-head often ends up comparing apples to oranges.

A backup project that starts with the wrong tool usually reveals itself during an actual disaster: a recovery that takes three times longer than expected, or a server that was never covered because the license didn’t include it. Knowing the architectural difference upfront avoids that kind of surprise.

Acronis’s advantage is the single-agent logic: the same software backs up a device, watches it for malware, and manages OS patches. Without a dedicated security team, running three jobs from one console is a real practical win. Veeam goes deep in the opposite direction — once the virtual machine count runs into the hundreds, building consistent recovery scenarios across different hypervisors needs a tool that goes further than Acronis’s baseline module.

Which one fits which scale

  • 10-50 devices, no dedicated IT security team: Acronis usually delivers broader coverage with fewer line items — the backup license already bundles anti-ransomware and patch management.
  • Many virtual servers, in-house infrastructure team: Veeam’s hypervisor depth and granular recovery options (single file, single mailbox, full server) stand out here.
  • Primarily backing up Microsoft 365 or other cloud apps: Both offer a SaaS module; Veeam’s coverage (including Entra ID and Salesforce) is broader, while Acronis focuses squarely on Microsoft 365.
  • Mixed environment (some physical servers, some cloud, plus endpoint devices): Running both side by side — Veeam on critical infrastructure, Acronis on endpoints — is usually cheaper than forcing one product to cover everything.

Ransomware protection and immutable backups

Both offer immutable storage: once a backup is written, it can’t be deleted or overwritten for a set retention period, so even if ransomware manages to encrypt the backup target, the original copy stays intact. The difference shows up during an actual attack. Acronis’s active protection watches for encryption behavior (like a mass change in file extensions), and once it’s detected, automatically restores the affected files from backup — even while the attack is still in progress. Veeam’s layer works through AI-driven malware detection combined with YARA rules and known indicator-of-compromise (IOC) scanning; its real strength is verifying “is this backup actually clean” before a restore.

Whichever one gets picked, turning on immutability alone isn’t enough — if the recovery time objective (RTO, the maximum acceptable time to get systems back up after a failure) and recovery point objective (RPO, the maximum acceptable data-loss window) aren’t defined with hard numbers, even the right tool can end up misconfigured.

Why licensing gets confusing

Acronis is mostly sold on a per-workload subscription basis; extended packages like EDR and XDR add to the annual line but stay consolidated on one invoice. Veeam runs on what it calls a “universal license” — a flexible model across three editions, Foundation, Advanced, and Premium — priced by which workloads (VMs, physical servers, SaaS mailboxes) are being protected. List pricing varies by organization on both sides; a real quote needs an inventory of the current environment first — device count, VM count, SaaS user count.

Frequently asked questions

Does it make sense to run both at once? Yes, and it’s a common setup in mixed environments. Critical virtual servers are protected with Veeam, endpoint devices with Acronis; management stays in two consoles, but each layer does what it’s best at.

Can existing Acronis backups be migrated to Veeam, or the other way around? There’s no direct format compatibility. Migration usually starts with a fresh full backup on the new system, while the old backups are kept accessible in parallel for recovery needs during the transition window.

Which one is cheaper for a small office? Fewer line items generally makes Acronis more predictable — backup, protection, and patch management come bundled in one license. Veeam’s entry tier is competitive too, but its scope is shaped more around infrastructure.

Does immutable backup require separate hardware? No — it can be set up through cloud storage that supports Object Lock, or compatible local storage. What matters is that the storage layer supports immutability settings.

Is backup software enough on its own for data-protection compliance (e.g. KVKK in Türkiye)? Backup is a technical safeguard against data loss, but it doesn’t cover compliance on its own. Access authorization, retention policy, and breach-notification processes still need to be set up separately.
